Crew rescued from listing Solent car transporter
(4 January 2015)

The crew of a car transporter ship, which ran aground in the Solent, off the Isle of Wight, have been taken to safety, the coastguard has said.

The Hoegh Osaka was heading to Germany when it ran on to the Bramble Bank, in the entrance to Southampton Water, at about 21:30 GMT.

Search for crew of cargo ship resumes at first light
(4 January 2015)

The search for the crew of a vessel found overturned off the north of Scotland has resumed.

Eight people were on board the Cypriot-registered Cemfjord, a cargo ship carrying cement.

The vessel's upturned hull was found by a passing ferry in the Pentland Firth on Saturday, but there was no distress call from the ship.

Italy ferry fire: Evacuation hampered by winds
(28 December 2014)

Ships and helicopters are taking part in a major rescue operation after an Italian ferry carrying 478 people caught fire around 40 nautical miles north-west of Corfu.

The Norman Atlantic was travelling from Patras in Greece to Ancona in Italy.

Choppy seas and strong winds are hampering the rescue. Early reports that it was tilting have been denied.

Tanker markets see storage boon from oil price collapse
(16 December 2014)

The oil price drop will hand tanker markets an unexpected bonus next year, boosting demand for oil storage at sea while distant eastern markets also bargain-hunt fuel and need shipping.

Supertanker rates are already close to five-year highs of over $83,000 a day - helped by a drop in shipping fuel bunker prices. Overcapacity, which has dogged owners for years, is also receding.
