GPS back-up: World War Two technology employed

Technology developed during World War Two is to be used as a back-up for GPS.

The General Lighthouse Authorities (GLA) have announced that they have installed a system called eLoran in seven ports across Britain.

The GLA say many critical instruments on ships use Global Navigation Satellite Systems, and if they fail the consequences could be disastrous.


A Celebration Cruise Liner Was Evacuated After Hitting an Unknown Object at Sea

Passengers on board a cruise through the Bahamas had to be evacuated Friday when their ship struck an unknown object at sea and lost power.

The Bahamas Celebration cruise was en route to Florida when it was forced to return to port on Grand Bahama Island after the incident, which occurred around 9 p.m. Friday, CNN reports.


Somali pirates free Indian sailors after four years in captivity

Somali pirates have freed seven Indian sailors detained for close to four years in exchange for an undisclosed ransom, Somali officials and a maritime monitoring group said on Friday.


Largest ship to sail on Thames reaches London Gateway
(19 October 2014)

The largest ever ship to enter the River Thames has arrived.

The 397m (1,300ft) long, 56m (180ft) wide ship can carry up to 15,500 containers and is the second largest container ship in the world.

Each Centre is home to the four port chaplains representing the Apostleship of the Sea, The Sailors' Society, The Mission to Seafarers and Queen Victoria Seamen's Rest.

Free transport is provided from the docks complex to and from the Centres.
